Promotes school libraries and school library services
as essential to all areas of the curriculum in order to enable the exploitation
of a wide range of resources, develop pupils' information skills, encourage
the reading habit and support equal opportunities and multi-cultural education
policies in schools.
The Group is concerned with the professional status of school librarians
and argues for salary and status commensurate with those of teaching staff holding
positions of similar responsibility. It supports moves for all librarians to
receive education in the basics of school librarianship during their initial
training, and for improved in-service and continuing education for school librarians.
It promotes the continuation and development of school library services as key
providers of resources and expertise to schools of all types.
The Group journal School Libraries In View provides members with information,
a platform for discussion and has a developing publications list on topics relating
to school librarianship. The Group organises an annual weekend conference as
well as one-day and half-day courses and seminars of national and local interest
at venues throughout the country.
SLG has members from all over the UK. It works on a national structure
but has a Scottish branch and a London
and Home Counties branch, each of which has its own committee, produces
a regular newsletter and organises courses and meetings in its area.
