  NEWSPLAN:
Diversity and Opportunity

  BRITISH LIBRARY

  Fourth National NEWSPLAN Conference.
9.30am to 4.30pm. The British Library Conference Centre, British Library, St. Pancras, London.
Background
The UK Government has quickened the pace of change for libraries and for museums. The initiatives of the Heritage Lottery Fund, The New Opportunities Fund, and of the DCMS are all re-shaping the activities of libraries and of museums. Increasing the provision of access to collections has become the focal point for collaborative projects. The NEWSPLAN 2000 Project has been formed to take forward the Heritage Lottery Fund award of £5 million for the microfilming of UK local newspapers that are fragile and unique.
Conference Aims
The participation of all the UK Regions and Ireland ensures that NEWSPLAN continues to be regarded as a model of UK-wide co-operation for the development of matters relating to the provision of access to and preservation of newspapers. As the development of the technology progresses, and as the possibilities of funding projects are enhanced, newspaper texts may be delivered to a wider audience than was thought possible only a few years ago. The Conference aims:
  • to show the range and diversity of UK and other countries' newspapers that are being preserved;
  • to show what newspaper collections can offer to the wider public, both in the UK and overseas, to enhance education, learning and research;
  • to re-emphasise the role of standards in ensuring successful microfilming and storage for preservation;
  • to provide a knowledge of recent developments in digital technology in the newspaper and library sectors;
  • to increase awareness of how co-operative projects can exploit digital technology to enhance access to newspapers.
About NEWSPLAN
NEWSPLAN is a joint British Library and Library Regions project which, over the past fifteen years, has recorded all collections of local and regional newspapers in libraries and other repositories in the UK and Ireland, has noted their state of preservation and conservation, and prioritised their transfer to microfilm. Members of NEWSPLAN Library Regions, which include the National Libraries of Wales, Scotland and Ireland, are encouraged to commit 1% of their budgets to filming. As a highly regarded and sustained national co-operative, NEWPLAN was successful in 1999 in securing funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the large scale microfilming of Local Newspapers in Peril. The NEWSPLAN 2000 Project has been formed to effect this work.
Conference Fee: £60.00. (includes VAT). Fee includes registration, lunch and refreshments.
