Scheme Conditions

A number of organizations have formal links with the Association under our 'Organizations in Liaison' scheme. The scheme was introduced in 1979,and the revised conditions as agreed by Council on 12 June 1996 are listed below.

  1. The object of this scheme is to provide communication of information and, where appropriate, mutual support, between The Library Association and such organizations as satisfy condition 2 below but which do not have a membership comprising entirely Library Association members and cannot therefore become groups of The Library Association.
  2. National organizations which include in membership a substantial number of members of The Library Association, and which are concerned in some way with the promotion of similar objects to those of The Library Association, may be taken into liaison with The Library Association.
  3. An organization accepted into liaison will remain independent in its policy and administration, but The Library Association shall have the right to appoint an observer to its governing body to act in a liaison capacity between the organization and itself.
  4. Liaison may be terminated at any time by notice from either side.
  5. The associated organization will undertake to print on its notepaper and reports 'In liaison with The Library Association'.
  6. The Library Association, if so requested, may offer the following assistance to an associated organization:
    1. accommodation for meetings, at a 20% discount rate;
    2. news of the organizations' activities in the Library Association record at the discretion of the Editor. Notices of meetings in the Calendar of Library Association record, subject to space being available;
    3. advertising in the Library Association record, at the same discount rate available to Library Association Branches and Groups (currently 20%);
    4. Library Association Publishing publications at the same discount rate available to Library Association members (currently 20%);
    5. one set of The Library Association Council papers, made available to a named contact.
  7. The Library Association, if so requested, may make a grant to an organization in liaison, in accordance with the following criteria:
    1. amount of all grants not to exceed £1,500.00 in any one year;
    2. grants are made to the organization in liaison rather than to an individual member of that organization;
    3. total amount to be allocated to successful applicants will not exceed £500.00 each in any year;
    4. organizations would normally only receive support for two years consecutively;
    5. applications for a grant should be made during the month of September for consideration early in October each year;
    6. applications will be considered, and grants allocated, by the Management Board, against the following criteria:
      1. pump priming, or seed corn funding, for a new idea or action;
      2. underwriting a high risk or capital intensive initiative;
      3. subsidizing a meeting or event to enable more people to attend;
      4. cognisance will be taken of other sources of funding which are available, particularly grants for travel, CPD, research and international activity;
    7. appropriate acknowledgement must be given to The Library Association for any financial support.
