LIBRARIES REWARDED FOR ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS PR & PUBLICITY INITIATIVESThe Library Association & Emerald Public Relations and Publicity Awards winners announced Innovative PR and Publicity initiatives are being recognised today at a ceremony at the British Library. Bernard Naylor, President of The Library Association will present five winners with a certificate and a year’s free electronic access to Emerald Fulltext. Linda Smith, Chair of The Library Association’s Publicity and Public Relations Group said, “Librarian’s understand the essential role that publicity plays in achieving key service objectives. All of the judges felt inspired and encouraged by the imagination and innovation represented in the entries this year. Caroline Newsome, Marketing Manager at Emerald said, “We are delighted to support these Awards which demonstrate how well libraries respond to the chance to excel. This partnership gives us a valuable opportunity to work closely with library and information services in all sectors. A special Award for personal PR achievement, donated by Farries International Booksellers in memory of Tom Farries, a founder of the Awards will be presented to June Turner, Essex Libraries. The 2001 winners are as follows: Sponsorship and PartnershipWinner - Millennium Project – Archive 2000 Dudley Metropolitan Borough Libraries A millennium project which asked local people to take photographs of their street, school place of work etc and donate them to a library archive collection. Sponsors provided prizes, print and reproduction of the photographs. Highly commended - Artemis in the Library Western Education and Library Board, Northern Ireland Commended - EEVL £5,000 Free Engineering Book Promotion EEVL: The Internet Guide for Engineering, Mathematics and Computing Commended -Voices in the City 2000: Dreaming of England Birmingham Library Services Multi-Media and Web Page Publicity Material Winner - BestofBiz.com London Business School Library A free interactive business and management research portal providing essential current awareness resources for business executives, information specialists, entrepreneurs and consultants. Highly Commended - Join the E-Revolution The Royal College of Nursing Commended - Tyne Bridge Publishing Web site Tyne Bridge Publishing at Newcastle Libraries and Information Service Printed Publicity Material Winner - The Beat Leeds Library and Information Services A literature development project aimed at 15-21 year olds in Leeds and promoted using fly posters, postcards and a specially created newspaper. The project included workshops with visual artists, hip hop events, live graffiti art, dj’s and breakdancers. Commended - EEVL Flyer EEVL: The Internet Guide for Engineering, Mathematics and Computing Commended - Free Baby Food Southampton City Council Libraries, Archives and Information Promotional Campaign with a budget over £500 Joint Winner - The Early Children’s Book Collection Buckinghamshire Libraries, Information, Museum and Archives A unique project to give public access to collection of early children’s books dating from the 18th Century . The collection was also catalogued and a comprehensive bibliography produced. Joint Winner - Essex Book Festival – ‘Home Grown’ Essex Libraries A regional book festival that showcased local writers, bringing them together with a wide range of readers in order to develop new audiences for reading and writing events.
