37 The British Library will be finalising its strategy as a result of this survey. Do you wish to make any other comments? Please continue on a separate sheet if necessary.
37.1 The British Library needs to focus its activities within the Government Agenda. The theme of social inclusion runs through this document. However, there is no recognition of the need to operate within a knowledge economy. There is nothing with regard to the contribution The Library could make to the economic prosperity of the UK.
37.2 The vision statement mentions the 'virtual bookshelf - at work, at school, at college, at home' but does not mention 'the community'. Public libraries and other community agencies could greatly assist the British Library to become more accessible.
37.3 The British Library is keen to open up a more direct relationship with their many users through 'virtual' services. There will be a need to explore how public library services and British library services can operate effectively alongside and between each other, for example, by resolving the issue of electronic signatures.
37.4 There is a lack of awareness within the library profession in the UK of the purpose, aims and objectives of the British Library. We were surprised by this lack of understanding, but would suggest that it carries a message for the British Library. The Library Association would welcome working with the British Library on a strategy to improve communication throughout the profession.
37.5 The strategy document does not outline a coherent mechanism for taking the views of service users, and non-users, into account. Evaluation methods should be participative and clearly defined.
