THE INSTITUTE OF
INFORMATION SCIENTISTS
THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION REVISED PROPOSALS
FOR A NEW ORGANISATION FOR THE LIBRARY AND INFORMATION PROFESSION:
TITLE
The UPG has considered the need for a title of the new
organisation. It is highly desirable that the name should reflect the encompassing nature
of the new organisation, that it resonates with the outside world and that it is
acceptable to the current memberships of the two initial constituent organisations.
The consultation reinforced our view that the
word "information" is important to many of our current and potential
constituencies as is the word "librarian". The importance of recognising the
Royal Charter in the title also emerged.
The UPG considered a large
number of possibilities and listened to the consultation and the discussion in the two
Councils. Though the UPG reached an initial consensus, subsequently endorsed by the IIS
Council, the title chosen, "The Chartered Institute of Information
Professionals" with its supplementary strap line for a period of time ("A
partnership of the Library Association and the Institute of Information Scientists")
proved unacceptable to the LAs Council.
The UPG were unanimous that
lack of consensus over title should not jeopardise the process of unification, or divert
attention from the benefits this
would bring to the whole profession. It is therefore recommended that members vote for
unification in principle, and refer the question of title to the Implementation Task
Force.
