THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION REVISED PROPOSALS
FOR A NEW ORGANISATION FOR THE LIBRARY AND INFORMATION PROFESSION:
REGIONS
A regional structure is envisaged to ensure that the whole
of the UK is covered and that members will have the opportunity to be engaged locally.
Every member will be entitled to membership of their region as part of the membership
entitlement.
It is recommended that the
regions in England should be coterminous with the governments Regional Development
Areas, Government offices and Regional Assemblies, and that smaller sub-branches be
established within larger regions where this is considered desirable.
The developing
devolution of government to Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales needs to be taken into
account in devising the final structure. When the organisation is established it would
include Scottish and Welsh regions, incorporating the IIS Scottish branch and the SLA, and
the WLA and IIS members in Wales respectively.
It is recommended that existing members of the
IIS and the LA with Corporate or Chartered status who are citizens of the Republic of
Ireland be assimilated into the equivalent category within the new organisation. However,
because of the national limits implied by the Privy Councils granting of a Royal
Charter, members of the Irish branch of the IIS who reside or work within the Republic
would become Overseas Members in the new organisation. LA members in that position are
already regarded as Overseas Members. It is proposed that new members in the Republic of
Ireland would be recommended to obtain their professional recognition and apply separately
for Overseas Membership of the new organisation.
A list of existing branches of the IIS and the LA appears
in Appendix B.
