| Socrates is the EU education programme. It aims to raise standards and achievement in all levels of education by encouraging and supporting European co-operation on a range of projects, initiatives and professional development opportunities. Socrates-Erasmus is for higher education. | |
| The EU's vocational training programme LEONARDO DA VINCI aims to support a number of initiatives, including giving people the chance to pursue training experience abroad. Other actions include the development of reference materials. | |
| The first phase of SOCRATES and LEONARDO ended in December 1999. The second phase of both SOCRATES and LEONARDO will last from January 2000 to December 2006. There are changes to both programmes in their second phase. | |
| The Tempus programme also provides cooperation and assistance in the area of higher education with Central and Eastern European countries, the Balkans, states of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. It aims to help consolidate economic reform and the development of democracy. | |
| The eLearning initiative of the European Commission seeks to mobilise the educational and cultural communities, as well as the economic and social players in Europe, in order to speed up changes in the education and training systems for Europe's move to a knowledge-based society. There may be occasional funding opportunities for studies under this initiative. | |
