Schools
Survey of UK Secondary School Libraries

Profile of Schools

4. Overall, 57% of the responses to the survey were from LEA maintained schools, 17% from grant maintained schools, 12% independent and 9% special; fewer than 1% were City Technology Colleges.

5. The majority of schools were classed as 11 to 18 (52%), 27% were 11 to 16; only 2.4% were 12 to 17. There were numerous exceptions across the age range 3 to 19; special and independent schools quoted wider age ranges for pupils.

6. The most `popular' size of school was between 500 and 1000 pupils (42%); 22% were between 1000 and 2000 pupils; 4% had over 2000 pupils and 9% were smaller than 100 pupils. Special schools tended to be smaller (nearly 70% with fewer than 100 pupils); to a lesser extent independent schools were also smaller. Schools in Northern Ireland tended to be smaller than in the rest of the UK.
