Keynote address
Expanding our horizons as technologies converge: a new identity for the information professional

Elspeth Hyams, Director, Institute of Information Scientists

Digital publishing, management information, knowledge management, interactive multimedia training, intranet and website management, on-line research - these are just a few of the new areas of expertise and competencies required of information professionals in the information society. What do these new challenges mean for traditional professional librarians and information scientists? How can they seize this opportunity and ensure that users get the tools and information they need, and that those best qualified to provide the service are the ones who win get commissioned for the job?

Elspeth Hyams is Director of the Institute of Information Scientists, the professional association for information professionals whose professional interest has focused on the process of managing information, rather than on the service to users. The IIS’s activities have traditionally complemented those of the Library Association and in this opening address, she looks at how technological convergence is bringing the two arms of the profession together.
