Public Library Authorities Conference 2001

e-volution, d-volution, re-volution:

e-government, regionalism and change in the new decade

Palace Hotel, Torquay, 18 - 21 September 2001

I look forward to meeting you at this the 21st Annual Public Library Authorities Conference.

Given all the changes taking place in the public library world just now, this 21st PLA Conference represents not only a coming of age of the foremost gathering of Elected Members and Senior Librarians, but it is also a chance to debate the issues, and the way forward, of a new coming of age of public libraries themselves. Many important initiatives have stemmed from discussions at PLA Conference over the years. This year will provide the opportunity for everyone to influence the way ahead in the new Millennium - take the chance.

Neil Bennett, Chair LA Public Libraries Group 2001-2002

This year’s conference reflects the rapid change which has made and will make so much impact on our services.

The theme for this conference was, in a way, self selecting. The challenge we face in Local Government to deliver services electronically by 2005, the rapid pace of change coupled with a regional focus, and the increasing engagement of public libraries in the strategic plans of key parties all point to the Public Library Authorities’ conference in Torquay.

Just as the conference itself reaches maturity at 21 this year, so we have to demonstrate that we have the key to the door - or the portal- that will enable access to knowledge, information and learning opportunities.

The conference will be the focus for debate and discussion, for the best conferences are the ones in which you play a part as well. I hope you will take this opportunity to participate in the 2001, 21st Public Library Authorities’ Conference.

Rob Froud, Director of Studies PLA Conference 2001

Torquay

Torbay is the number one choice of many professional Association meetings set, as it is, in a lovely bay favoured by warm weather currents.

The English Riviera

Participants at the Public Library Authorities Conference have voted, consistently for some years, to return bi-ennually to this popular destination, easily reached

By road: Excellent road communication with the M5 motorway to Exeter, A38 and A380 dual-carriageway connection to Newton Abbot and a pleasant drive into Torquay.

By rail: The Grand Hotel is situated just a minute’s walk from Torquay Station and the Palace just five minutes journey by taxi (or our complimentary shuttle minibus during peak registration times).

By air: Both Exeter and Plymouth Airports are just 35 minutes drive from Torquay. A taxi meet and greet service can be arranged.

Your choice of hotels

There are two excellent PLA Conference designated hotels:

The Palace Hotel

Beautifully situated in extensive grounds, the Palace Hotel - the venue for the PLA Conference and main meals for all the delegates - offers four star accommodation.

Originally built for the Bishop of Exeter, it was considerably extended when opened as a leading West Country hotel in the early 20s. Used as a RAF Hospital during WW2, the hotel is one of the very few UK quality hotels remaining in private ownership.

The Palace has a reputation for the highest standards of cuisine, accommodation and hospitality, offering the PLA Conference quality ensuite rooms and the opportunity to enjoy superb dining and many facilities including tennis and squash courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, saunas, snooker tables, a 9-hole golf course and a fully equipped gymnasium.

The Grand Hotel

If you are coming to the conference by train, you will find The Grand just a minute’s walk from Torquay Station.

The Grand is a four star seafront hotel, with extensive facilities including an inside swimming pool, jacuzzi, multi-gym, sunbed, sauna, all-weather tennis court and snooker tables.

All meals, except breakfast, will be taken at the Palace Hotel.

A complimentary shuttle mini-bus service will operate between the conference hotels throughout the week for the benefit of delegates.
