Community Services Group of CILIP

	Social Inclusion and Libraries is a new Web based service which aims to guide people to resources about social inclusion relevant to public libraries. It is jointly funded by the Community Development Foundation, the Society of Chief Librarians and the Community Services Group.

Mission Statement

The Community Services Group of CILIP works to promote equal access for all communities to library and information services and to combat disadvantage.

The Group is active on the following issues:

• Services for retired people

• Single parents
  
• Homelessness

The Group achieves its goals in the following ways:

• Advising and informing policymakers
  
• Encouraging the role of library and information services in community development strategies
  
• Increasing awareness of the role and value of information in communities and to statutory and voluntary agencies
  
• Supporting library and information workers and promoting best practice
  
• Supporting employers in working towards the elimination of discrimination due to age, disability, race and culture,gender and sexual orientation

Community Services Group activities

• The Community Initiative Award, administered by CSG, which commends examples of good practice in community library and information work
• Community Librarian, the newsletter which provides news and views and a diary of events
• Conferences, seminars and workshops are planned in partnership with a variety of organisations in the social policy and caring services field
• A publications programme that reflects the concerns and issues of organisations working in library, information, advice and counselling work
• A regional structure which provides courses, newsletters, publications and networking at a local level

The Community Services Group is one of CILIP's special interest groups and is a registered charity (Registered Charity No. 313014).
