Those of you who knew him, will know that Keith Barker, Resources Development Manager, Orchard Learning Resources Centre, Westhill College was an exceptional man. His knowledge of and enthusiasm for children's books was legendary. Following his sudden death in November 1998, his friends and colleagues in the Library Association School Libraries and Youth Libraries Groups and the School Library Association wanted to find a way to pay tribute to the contribution he had made to the world of children's literature and libraries.

It is from this that the Keith Barker Millennium Children's Book Awards were developed. These were special one off awards presented as part of the special joint 'Under the Covers' conference in July 2000. They celebrated books that have had a significant impact on children themselves or on the development of children's literature. They highlighted some of the best children's books of the century, chosen by the librarians, teachers, publishers and others who have been involved in producing and promoting them to make sure that they reach their intended audience.

Reproduced below is the voting booklet, from which the award winners were chosen, along with the winning book from each section highlighted. Please read through this a wonderfully evocative list of the best Children's literature from the last 100 years. Be amazed, as I was, by just how long ago my favourite books were written. The "Personal Choice of the Century" is a book published in the period between 1940 and 1959!
