 Sure
Start in Westminster
Sure Start Westminster recently celebrated (July 15th
2001) the opening of the newly renovated Church Street childrens
library, with a Fun Day attended by over 250 local families and
service providers. The day started with a formal opening led by
Councillor Page, Vice Chairman of the Education (Lifelong Learning)
Committee of Westminster City Council. This was followed by a
lively speech from Jonathan Douglas, Professional Advisor for
Youth and School Libraries at the Library Association. Everyone
enjoyed the special cake, decorated with the Sure Start logo.
The day was sponsored by the publishers Random House; and Rob
Lewis, author and illustrator, held workshops for the children.
Elmer the Elephant kept everybody entertained, and there was also
storytelling, face painting, juggling and plenty of food! The
day acted as a focus to bring together all groups within the community
in a happy and lively event.
 Church
Street childrens library is a focal point for local families
and these capital works are the beginning of a programme of activities
to increase learning opportunities for young children. The childrens
library has been extended to provide a special corner for under-fives,
and extra facilities for this age-group, including ICT, provided.
Sure Start Westminster and Westminster Libraries are working
together on a range of initiatives. These include extending the
Book Start scheme to children aged 18 months and 3 years, and
the appointment of a literacy development worker to coordinate
the scheme and promote reading and the use of books to parents.
