Yorkshire & Humberside YLG Chair’s Report

2001 is proving to be a busy year for Yorkshire & Humberside YLG Teh season kicked off in February with the AGM & Carnegie/Greenaway judging, closely followed by the first of our highly successful day schools (postponed from the previous November owing to the flooding situation). Entitled 'Talking Pictures' this event, at Leeds Central Library, focussed on enhancing appreciation and evaluation of illustrations in children's books. Mel Gibson led an extremely enjoyable and informative day, and delegates soon found themselves infected by her enthusiasm for the subject. After discovering a whole new appreciation of Maurice Sendak's 'Where The Wild Things Are', everyone entered into the discussions of selected books with something akin to missionary fervour, and the end of the session arrived all too soon for some!

York Central Library was the venue in June for Anne Harding's 'Boys & Reading' day school. Fromn the questions and issues raised by the delegates it was clear that the problem of encouraging boys back into reading is widespread, and even if solutions may not be immediate, everyone went back home from York fired with renewed energy and enthusiasm to tackle the difficulties. It came as no surprise that this course was oversubscribed, so much so that another course has been arranged for March 2002 and looks set to be full as well.

The final Yorkshire & Humberside YLG event of 2001 — 'Count Me In', will take place on 14th November 2001 at Barnsley Central Library. This course will deal with various issues surrounding social inclusion, such as travellers, asylum seekers, Surestart & Bookstart with ethnic minorities, and a Leeds Barnardo's project with young people.
