A REVIEW OF THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION'S 150 YEARS OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES CAMPAIGN

Welcome

Welcome to this review of The Library Association’s 150 Years of Public Libraries campaign.

As we were putting it together three themes began to emerge – celebration, innovation and evaluation.

Celebration, because this was the fundamental basis of the campaign – to celebrate how library professionals have truly shaped the Britain we live in today and how the role of the public library is set to develop and grow in the years to come.

Innovation, in recognition of the ingenuity and creativity of librarians at local level, who promoted their library service by organising events to mark the anniversary.

And evaluation, because we wanted to appraise the campaign, learn lessons for the future and create a benchmark with which to compare future promotional activity.

We have taken these themes as a structure for this review. In it we outline the events organised by The Library Association, highlight some of the best local activity and aim to measure the success of our media liaison and promotional material.

We hope that you will enjoy hearing some of the stories from the celebrations, that those who took part will be justly proud of their contribution and that others might be inspired to take part in campaigns of the future.
